On July 16, 2014, Missy Jenkins Smith shocked and inspired the crowd of 1,000 educators at the annual Kentucky Association of School Administrators conference by walking across the stage with the help of a brace and walker. It was the first time Missy walked on a stage in 14 years, since she was invited to do so at the 2000 Democratic National Convention. Missy was paralyzed from the chest down in the 1997 Heath High School shooting in Paducah, Ky. She is now a full-time national speaker.
